Printing Product Barcodes

The POS app can print barcode labels for your products, so items can be scanned at the register with a connected barcode scanner instead of being tapped in by hand.

This is aimed at retail-style selling — a shop counter, a bakery, a takeaway fridge — rather than table service.

What You Need

  • A label printer, connected either by USB to the tablet or over the network
  • Label stock of 60 × 30 mm, which is the size the app formats for
  • A barcode scanner connected to the POS, to scan the labels afterwards

Warning

Label printing is supported on Posbel-compatible label printers. On other models the labels may come out misaligned, badly sized or unreadable — the app cannot adapt its output to an arbitrary printer.

The app prints to the USB label printer if one is attached, and otherwise sends the labels to the printer address configured on the device.

Printing Labels

Open the Menu on the Home Screen and choose Print product barcodes.

The screen has three parts:

  • Left — your product groups
  • Centre — the products in the selected group, as a grid
  • Right — the print queue

1. Build the queue

  • Tap a group on the left to show its products
  • Tap a product to add it to the queue on the right
  • Or use the search field at the top to find a product by name across every group

Tapping the same product again adds it a second time — that is how you print two labels for one item.

2. Remove anything you did not mean to add

Each line in the queue has a delete action. The queue is exactly what will be printed, one label per line.

3. Print

The button at the bottom counts what is queued — Print 12 labels. Tap it and the labels print in order.

While printing runs, a progress indicator replaces the button. Wait for it to finish rather than leaving the screen.

What Is on the Label

Each label carries:

  • The product name, in bold — shortened automatically if it is long
  • The dine-in price
  • The barcode itself, with its number printed underneath

Note

A product does not need a barcode assigned in the Admin Panel first. If you have not set one, the app prints a barcode derived from the product itself, and that code scans back to the same product. Assign your own barcode on the product only when you need to match a code that already exists — a supplier's EAN, for instance.

Labels Come Out Crooked or Off-Centre

The usual cause is the label roll sitting loose in the printer.

Push the roll fully to the left-hand side of the printer and re-seat the guides so it cannot drift, then print one label to check before running a batch.

A roll that wanders produces barcodes printed partly off the edge of the label, which scanners will refuse to read even though the label looks nearly right.

Keeping Labels Current

A label is a printed snapshot. It does not update when you change the product.

Reprint labels after you change a product's name or price, or the shelf will disagree with the till.

Tip

Print prices onto labels only if you are willing to reprint them on every price change. Many shops print name and barcode for scanning and let the register be the single source of truth on price.
